Specialty Groups on ChemTechStandards & Partnerships

You may have noticed that we have a new specialty group on ChemTechStandards & Partnerships-the ACS-Approved Programs group. You may be wondering who this group is and why it warrants its own private group. Even if you haven't been wondering, keep reading; you might be interested, anyway.

Since 1991, ACS has offered approval to qualified associate-level chemistry-based technology programs. Like traditional chemistry programs, chemistry-based technology programs cover the theories and concepts taught in most General and Organic Chemistry classes. However, chemistry-based technology programs go a step further and teach students how to apply these concepts in the workplace.

Programs are evaluated by the ACS Chemical Technology Program Approval Service (CTPAS), which places a high premium on the strength of a program's relationship with industry. Employer needs vary greatly by industry and location, and programs have only two years to teach students the skills and knowledge they will need to be successful. Consequently, strong partnerships are critical to the success of a program.

Of the roughly 150 chemistry-based technology programs in  the U.S., 15 have earned ACS approval. As a new benefit to the approved programs, ACS has established a private group where the program coordinators and their industry partners can discuss challenges and successes, download forms and effective practices, and contact CTPAS.

Because of the importance of partnerships to the success of chemistry-based technology programs, the specialty site was placed here, in the ChemTechStandards & Partnerships web community. For more information on ACS approval of chemistry-based technology programs, visit the CTPAS website.

Also, I am looking for other groups that might benefit from a specialty group site. If you have an idea, contact me, and I will be happy to see if it is appropriate for ChemTechStandards & Partnerships.
